Deah Shaddy Barakat (23), Yusor Mohammad (21) and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha (19) were shot in the head. Three Muslim students were killed last night Eastern Time in their apartment, near the University of Chapel Hill where they studied.
The killer, 46-year-old Craig Stephen Hicks, drove to the police station after committing the crime and surrendered peacefully. Deah Shaddy Barakat (23), Yusor Mohammad (21) and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha (19) were shot in the head.
Investigators have not yet released the motive for the triple murder, although social media is already buzzing about the victims' religion as a possible reason for the heinous crime. The killer had left anti-Islamic messages on social media, which police have found.
The murders have shaken the usually peaceful community, right next to the University of North Carolina.
- This is a very quiet area. Such a crime is a real shock for us - says Bethany Boring, a resident of Chapel Hill.
Interestingly, world media are silent about this event, which is also a topic of discussion on the internet.
