Tribunal calls for action: Criminals in Montenegro will not sleep peacefully, what will happen to Gašević

A delegation of judges, prosecutors and investigators from Montenegro yesterday concluded a two-day visit to the Tribunal. They met with ICTY judges and prosecutors and became acquainted with the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), which will assist in taking over cases during the closure of the ICTY.

The main goal of the visit was the exchange of knowledge and experience of ICTY judges and prosecutors, in order to help the Montenegrin judiciary in investigating, prosecuting and resolving war crimes cases.

During the first day, the Montenegrin delegation, led by Supreme Court judge Stanko Vučinić and Deputy Chief State Attorney Stojanka Radović, met with ICTY judges headed by President Carmel Agius and President Theodor Meron.

Discussions included, among other things, the application of international legal standards in war crimes cases. During the second day of the visit, the Montenegrins met with Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz.

Speaking about the exchange, one of the visitors from Montenegro said: "We are impressed by the work of international courts. In addition, it was interesting to gain insight into the vast amount of evidence stored at the court."

The visit was organized by the US Embassy in Podgorica, as a way to improve cooperation between the Montenegrin judiciary and the Tribunal and the MICT.

Patria has written about several cases in which criminals live peacefully in Montenegro. Particular attention was drawn to articles about Zoran Gašević, now a high-ranking police officer in Nikšić, who is accused of serious crimes in the vicinity of Sarajevo, in Hadžići.
