Reaction sought over genocide denial during screening of 'Quo Vadis, Aida?'

(Patria) - The Social Democratic Party of Montenegro (SDP) has called on the authorities to react to the denial of genocide by a group of citizens during the screening of the film "Quo Vadis, Aida?" on Radio Television of Montenegro (RTCG) on December 29.

During the screening of the film, which deals with the genocide in Srebrenica, about twenty people protested in front of the entrance to the national public broadcaster's building with a banner denying the genocide.

In Montenegro, the Resolution of the Parliament, adopted on June 17 this year, prohibits public denial of the existence or downplaying of the genocide in Srebrenica.

The Police Directorate has not yet responded to the inquiry by Radio Free Europe whether measures have been taken against the participants of the gathering who denied the genocide.

SDP spokesperson Amina Cikotić assessed that the gathering showed the "triumph" of hatred, nationalism, and the Serbian world.

"I call on the competent authorities to act within their powers. We must put an end to such things once and for all so that we can all begin to recover and move away from the nationalist matrix they have put us in," Cikotić wrote on Twitter.

The protest was, as stated, organized by the non-governmental organizations Orthodox Brotherhood "Zavjetnici Tvrdoš Nikšić" and Orthodox Brotherhood "Stupovi".

In the genocide in Srebrenica on July 11, 1995, the forces of the Army of Republika Srpska and paramilitary forces from Serbia killed more than 8,000 Bosniaks.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia first established that genocide occurred in Srebrenica in 2001.

For the genocide in Srebrenica, among others, the former president of Republika Srpska, Radovan Karadžić, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019, and the last verdict for genocide was delivered to Ratko Mladić, who was sentenced to life imprisonment on June 8.
