(Patria) - At least one person died and around forty were injured in today's tram accident in Milan, confirmed by the police administration of that city in northern Italy.
The tram derailed and hit a residential building. The cause of the accident is still unknown.
Police have blocked the entire area around the accident site, which is located immediately next to Milan's historic center, preventing public access.
- I heard a loud explosion. I saw that part of the tram hit a shop - said 17-year-old Anna, who was in a nearby office at the time of the accident, to Agence France-Presse.
One of the passengers told the Italian agency Ansa that he initially thought it was an earthquake.
- I was sitting and suddenly I found myself on the floor with the other passengers. It was terrible - he added.
