Trump officially signed recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan

(Patria) - US President Donald Trump today signed a proclamation on the official US recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

This document represents a departure from American policy in the last half-century, AP reported.

Trump announced such a move on Twitter last week.

 

 

Before signing at the White House in the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said that "any possible future Middle East peace agreement must take into account Israel's right to self-defense.".

Netanyahu has long pressured the US to recognize the Golan, occupied in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981, as Israeli.

Trump's recognition gives him a boost ahead of the Israeli elections, which are expected to be uncertain.
