Thirty-eight girls were killed and another 20 were seriously injured on Friday evening in a traffic accident in Eswatini, while they were heading to the annual reed dance celebration at the royal palace, reports the Patria news agency.

The King of Eswatini, Mswati III, has the right during this ceremony to choose one of the girls. Sindiwsa Slamini, his 14th and last wife, was chosen during the reed dance in 2013.
The Swaziland Solidarity Network (SSN), which advocates for democracy in the small kingdom between South Africa and Mozambique, issued a statement calling on the royal family to help the families of the victims and to cancel the reed dance this year, reports Hina.
