Heatwave in Mexico claims at least 100 lives

(Patria) - At least 100 people have died in the past two weeks in Mexico from heat-related causes as temperatures in some parts of the country climbed close to 50 degrees Celsius, the ministry of health announced on Thursday.

The three-week heatwave this month strained the power grid with record demand and forced authorities to suspend classes in some areas, Reuters reported.

More than two-thirds of the deaths occurred in the week of June 18-24, and the week before, the ministry stated. Only one heat-related death was registered in the same period last year.

Nearly all the deaths were attributed to heatstroke, with a few from dehydration.

About 64% of the deaths occurred in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, bordering Texas. Most of the others were in neighboring Tamaulipas and Veracruz on the Gulf coast.

Temperatures have fallen in recent days as the rainy season brought much-needed precipitation. However, some northern cities are still experiencing high temperatures. In the state of Sonora, the town of Aconchi recorded a temperature of 49 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
