(Patria) - For the first time in the history of the New Year's Eve celebration on Times Square in New York, a police drone will monitor the situation tonight, and revelers, of whom Mayor Bill de Blasio expects up to two million in the area, will be guarded by about 7,000 police officers.
The Associated Press reports that among them will be members of anti-terrorist police units armed with long guns and assisted by dogs that can sniff out bombs.
Police vehicles and trucks filled with sand will also be placed on Times Square, intended to stop vehicles that might try to ram into the crowd.
For the first time, police will deploy a drone to monitor a major outdoor event.
