USA, (Patria) - Europe and America must act as soon as possible to prevent Bosnia from going off the rails, writes former CNN reporter Frida Ghitis for The Washington Post, stating that ethnic passions in Bosnia and Herzegovina are being stirred up amid a wave of nationalism across Europe, while at the same time a Russian campaign to sabotage governments friendly to the West is underway.
Ghitis points out that at the center of this chaos is Milorad Dodik, the president of the BiH entity of Republika Srpska, whose name, Ghitis states, was chosen in 1992 by Radovan Karadžić, convicted of genocide against Bosnian Muslims.
The journalist reminds that Dodik wants to secede from BiH and perhaps even join Serbia. She states that Dodik supports Croats who want their own entity, while Bakir Izetbegović responds that a third entity cannot be established without war.
Ghitis further explains how Russia wants Bosnian Serbs to block BiH's path to NATO. In addition, the Kremlin has realized that the West's growing indifference makes fragile countries fertile ground for its anti-Western strategy.
"While the West looks the other way, others are also interested in BiH," writes Ghitis, recalling the rally by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held in Sarajevo.
Ghitis believes that the European Union, NATO, and the USA should act without delay to prevent new tragedies in BiH, reports NAP.
