In a traffic accident that occurred early this morning on the highway near the village of Donje Krajince near Leskovac, 40 people were injured, 20 of them seriously, reports the Patria News Agency.
According to initial information, they are migrants from Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Syria who illegally entered Serbia, and were likely heading towards Hungary and the EU.
The accident happened around 5 AM on the section of the road from Grdelica to Niš, when the vehicle they were in overturned, RTS reported.
Five migrants have life-threatening injuries, including spinal cord injuries and brain hemorrhages.
The head of the Leskovac hospital, Milan Stojković, said that many migrants suffered fractures, soft tissue injuries, as well as spinal injuries.
- The exact number of people in the van is not yet known, and all the injured have been taken care of at the Leskovac General Hospital and the Niš Clinical Center, the Leskovac police stated.
