SUV plows into pedestrians in central Leipzig, dead and injured reported

(Patria) - At least one person has been killed and several injured after an SUV plowed into a group of people in a pedestrian zone in central Leipzig, eastern Germany.

Local radio reported that the damaged SUV, a Volkswagen with one person inside, was seen speeding through the pedestrian zone in the city center.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed that the driver has been arrested and that there is no longer a threat to public safety in the city.

A large number of emergency vehicles are at the scene.

Shops in the pedestrian zone have been closed. The driver reportedly showed signs of mental instability at the time of arrest.
