Tanović's film "Death in Sarajevo" nominated for Oscar

The Association of Filmmakers of BiH, with the support of the Old Town Sarajevo Municipality, has chosen this year's candidate from Bosnia and Herzegovina for the Oscar award, and that is the film Death in Sarajevo by director Danis Tanović. The film had its world premiere this year at the Berlin Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear for Best Feature Film in the main competition of this prestigious festival, reports Patria News Agency.

The film was distributed in cinemas in BiH in May this year, and it was successfully screened at numerous film festivals and at the Sarajevo Film Festival. The film stars Vedrana Seksan, Muhamed Hadžović, Izudin Bajrović, Senžana Vidović, Faketa Salihbegović-Avdagić, Edin Avdagić, and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian producer of the film is Amra Bakšić Čamo SCCA/Pro.ba. The editing is by Redžinald Šimek and the director of photography is Erol Zubčević, both members of the Association of Filmmakers of BiH, as are the director and producer.

Members of the commission, which was previously confirmed by the American Academy, were: Ines Tanović, director and president of UFRBIH; screenwriter Elma Tataragić, costume designer Lejla Graho, director Pjer Žalica, production designer Vedran Hrustanović, director of photography Amel Đikoli, director Srđan Vuletić, producer Zoran Galić, and editor Predrag Solomun.

According to the rules of the American Academy, producers with BiH feature films distributed between 1.10.2015 and 1.10.2016 in cinemas in Bosnia and Herzegovina for at least 7 consecutive days, who have DCP or 35 mm film copies and which are predominantly in the language of the country they are representing and not more than 40% in English, were eligible to apply.

The Association of Filmmakers of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been nominating films for the American Academy in the Best Foreign Language Film category for 14 years.

Following the nomination by the Association of Filmmakers of BiH in 2001, Danis Tanović's film No Man's Land was awarded the prestigious Oscar for Best Foreign Film in March 2002. After that, the Association has chosen a candidate every year: in 2003, the candidate was the film GORI VATRA by Pjer Žalica; in 2004, the film KOD AMIDŽE IDRIZA by Pjer Žalica; in 2005, SASVIM LIČNO by Nedžad Begović; in 2006, GRBAVICA by Jasmila Žbanić; in 2007, TEŠKO JE BITI FIN by Srđan Vuletić; in 2008, the film SNIJEG by Aida Begić; in 2009, ČUVARI NOĆI by Namik Kabil, and in 2010, CIRKUS COLUMBIA by Danis Tanović, for 2011 it was the film BELVEDERE by Ahmed Imamović, for 2012 the film DJECA by Aida Begić, for 2013 EPIZODA U ŽIVOTU BERAČA ŽELJEZA by Danis Tanović, which also made it to the shortlist of 10 candidates. For 2014, the candidate was the film SA MAMOM by Faruk Lončarević, and last year it was the film NAŠA SVAKODNEVNA PRIČA by director Ines Tanović.
