WHO: Humanitarian situation in Gaza inhumane, it is a zone of death

(Patria) - The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is inhumane, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday, calling the Palestinian territory "a zone of death", AFP reported.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and demanded unimpeded access for international aid.

"The health and humanitarian situation in Gaza is inhumane and continues to worsen," Tedros told a media briefing.

"Gaza has become a zone of death. Much of the territory has been destroyed," he added.

"What kind of world do we live in when people cannot get food and water, or where people who cannot even walk are unable to receive care? What kind of world do we live in when health workers are at risk of bombing while doing their life-saving work?"

"What kind of world do we live in when hospitals have to close because there is no longer electricity or medicine to help save patients, and they are targeted by military forces?"

"We need a ceasefire now. We need the hostages to be released. We need the bombs to stop falling, and we need unimpeded humanitarian access. Humanity must prevail," Tedros said.

"Severe malnutrition has increased dramatically since the start of the war, from less than one percent to more than fifteen percent in some areas, putting more lives at risk," Tedros said.

"This figure will grow the longer the war lasts and disrupts supplies. We note with concern that the World Food Programme cannot enter northern Gaza with supplies."
