World leaders bid farewell to Pope Francis: He wanted a more just, peaceful and compassionate world

(Patria) - World leaders on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, describing him as a symbol of compassion, social justice and moral leadership whose voice resonated far beyond the Catholic Church.

Buckingham Palace released a message from the King paying tribute to the late Pope Francis.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla met with the Pope earlier this month during a visit to Italy, and the Palace then posted a photo of the meeting on social media with a message in Italian: "che occasione speciale" – "what a special occasion".

In today's statement, the King praised Pope Francis, saying he "touched the lives of so many people".

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also bid farewell to the Pope, praising Pope Francis for his courageous spiritual role.

"Pope Francis was a pope for the poor, the oppressed and the forgotten. He was close to the reality of human frailty, meeting Christians around the world affected by war, hunger, persecution and poverty. Yet he never lost hope for a better world," Starmer said.

The White House posted on X, releasing separate photos of President Donald Trump, his wife and Pope Francis, as well as US Vice President JD Vance with the Pope.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences over the death of Pope Francis.

In a letter addressed to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, released by the Kremlin, Putin said that Pope Francis "enjoyed great international authority as a faithful servant of Christian teaching, a wise religious and statesman, and a consistent defender of the high values of humanism and justice."

"Throughout all the years of his pontificate, he actively promoted the development of dialogue between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, as well as constructive interaction between Russia and the Holy See," Putin said.

He also said he had the opportunity to communicate with him on many occasions and that he will "forever preserve the brightest memory of him," describing him as an "extraordinary person."

"In this sad hour, I wish to convey words of compassion and support to the entire Catholic clergy," he added.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on platform X that the late Pope inspired millions "with his humility and love so pure for the less fortunate," adding that his legacy will continue to guide efforts for "a more just, peaceful and compassionate world."

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola called Pope Francis "the people's pope," saying his "infectious smile captured millions of hearts" and that he will be remembered for his "hope for peace, compassion for equality, and social justice."

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also expressed condolences "to the Catholic community and all who were touched by his humanity," describing "Pope Francis's commitment to peace and compassion" as an inspiration to millions.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed condolences to Catholics worldwide, praising the Pope's humility and dedication to the most vulnerable during "these times of war."

"From Buenos Aires to Rome, Pope Francis wanted the Church to bring joy and hope to the poorest," Macron wrote on X and added:

"May that hope rise again, endlessly."

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the Catholic Church and the world had lost "a defender of the weak, a reconciler, and a warm-hearted person."

"I deeply appreciated his clear-sighted view of the challenges that concern us all. My condolences go out to believers around the world," he said.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described Pope Francis as "a great man and a great pastor," paying tribute to his friendship, leadership, and resilience during times of suffering.

"His teachings never failed, even in moments of trial and pain," Meloni said.

"We will walk the path he showed us, seeking peace and building a more just and fairer society," she added.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described him as "a good, warm, and sensitive man."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez highlighted Pope Francis's commitment to peace, social justice, and the most vulnerable, while German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz recalled a man "guided by humility and faith in God's mercy."

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani echoed that sentiment, calling Francis "a great pope" and "a friend of Italy," emphasizing his care for creation, mercy, and fraternity.

US Vice President JD Vance said his "heart is with the millions of Christians around the world who loved him."

"I was happy to see him yesterday (Sunday), although he was obviously very ill. But I will always remember him for the sermon he gave in the very early days of Covid. It was truly beautiful."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Pope Francis will be remembered as "a beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage for millions of people around the world."

"He diligently served the poor and the oppressed. For those who suffered, he inspired a spirit of hope. I fondly remember my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and comprehensive development. His love for the people of India will always remain in our hearts."
