World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, 30,000 accidents with 244 fatalities in 2020

SARAJevo, (Patria) - The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is observed on the third Sunday of November. It is a high-profile global event that remembers the many who have been killed and
seriously injured on the world's roads and acknowledges the suffering of all affected victims, families, and communities – millions added each year to the countless millions already suffering.

According to statistical data, a total of 29,703 traffic accidents occurred on the roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the past year 2020, of which 6,260 were traffic accidents with fatalities and injured persons. 244 people lost their lives, while 7,307 people sustained serious bodily injuries.

This year marks the beginning of a new Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, during which this World Day will play a very important role – by highlighting the very reasons for all necessary actions during this upcoming decade.

Students of the Faculty of Transport and Communications of the University of Sarajevo, as well as members of the Association of Traffic and Communications Engineers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, will mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2021 (WDR) using the slogan: REMEMBER. SUPPORT. ACT.

The theme of this year's Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is "Act for Low Speeds".

The aim of marking the Day of Remembrance is to provide a platform for road traffic victims and their families to remember all those killed and seriously injured on the roads, to advocate for better support for road traffic victims and victims' families, and to promote evidence-based actions to prevent and ultimately stop further traffic fatalities and injuries. The focus is on reducing traffic speeds, which are the most common cause of traffic accidents, and thus drawing attention to low speeds, which actually mean life.

Between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM, on the plateau in front of the BBI Center in Sarajevo, members of the Association of Traffic and Communications Engineers in BiH and students of the Faculty of Transport and Communications UNSA will mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, address the media and the public, and distribute promotional materials and leaflets.
