Swedish politician who saved a baby from a river in Podgorica elected as MEP

(Patria) - Adnan Dibrani, a Swedish politician of Kosovar origin, has been elected as a Member of the European Parliament as a Social Democrat candidate.

Dibrani has already served three terms in the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, where he is a member of the finance committee. He also served as a representative in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

In a statement he made when the Social Democrats announced him as a candidate, he expressed hope that his origin would be an added value in the work that awaits him.

- It's not that I applied for this, but I think it will be fun. I come from the Balkans, and perhaps in these times it is an advantage to have someone who understands both East and West - Dibrani said at the time, reports eu.me.

He became known to the regional public in March last year, when, along with three other people, he heroically saved a baby from the icy Morača River.

He was part of the observation mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which monitored the election day in Montenegro. At that time, in a statement to Pobjeda, he explained what happened that day in Podgorica.

- I was crossing the bridge and looked towards the water when I saw a woman and a child floating down the river. Some other guys came, went down to the river, and pulled the baby out of the water, while others called an ambulance.

I ran towards them and saw them holding the baby, who showed no signs of life. Since I have a young child at home, I knew what needed to be done in such situations - Adnan recounted at the time.

Four months later, he returned to Podgorica and met with the family of the boy he had saved.

- What made me happiest was that the boy is perfectly healthy, has recovered successfully, and is just smiling - Dibrani told the media upon his return to Montenegro.

Adnan Dibrani was born in 1985. He was seven years old when his family moved from Kosovska Mitrovica to Sweden.

He studied economics, and before entering politics, he was a bank employee. He is the first Albanian from Kosovo to sit as a Member of the European Parliament.
