Sweden requested arrest of WikiLeaks founder on suspicion of rape

(Patria) – A Swedish prosecutor investigating Julian Assange for rape has submitted a request to the local court for an arrest warrant in absentia. 

If the request is approved, the court order would be the first step towards extraditing the WikiLeaks founder from Great Britain, where he is currently serving a 50-week prison sentence.

Sweden reopened the rape investigation last week, which began in 2010 and was halted in 2017 when Assange hid from justice in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. 

Assange was arrested in London last month, after spending seven years in the embassy, which eventually revoked his asylum.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecution in Sweden, Eva-Marie Persson, announced that she will issue a European arrest warrant for Assange for extradition to Sweden if the court accepts the request for an arrest warrant in absentia.

A British court will decide on the extradition requests from Sweden and the USA for Assange. The USA has been given until June 12 to present its case against the WikiLeaks founder.
