Sweden Seeks NATO Membership in Exchange for Supplying Aircraft to Ukraine

(Patria) - Sweden will send a new military support package to Ukraine worth $199 million, mainly consisting of artillery ammunition.

Jonson said at a press conference that the armed forces should report by November 6 on the potential dispatch of Jas Gripen aircraft to Ukraine after the government asked them to assess this issue.

But he reiterated that Sweden, for domestic security reasons, would have to become a NATO member before it could potentially supply any fighter jets.

Sweden hopes to join the NATO defense alliance soon, although its accession has been delayed by member states Turkey and Hungary.

The new military aid package will be Sweden's 14th aid package to Ukraine since the Russian invasion, bringing the total value of such aid from the Nordic country to just over 22 billion kronor.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned European leaders at an informal meeting in Granada, Spain, on Thursday that Russia could attack other countries within five years if Europe falters in its support.

He also said, however, that he is confident in the continuation of American and European financial aid.
