Sunak admits defeat, new British prime minister is Labour leader Keir Starmer

(Patria) - Keir Starmer will be the next British prime minister with his Labour Party expected to win a huge majority in the general election, while Rishi Sunak's Conservatives are predicted to suffer historic losses.

A poll showed Labour winning 410 seats in the 650-seat parliament, ending 14 years of Conservative-led government.

Sunak's party is predicted to take just 131 seats, down from 346 when parliament was dissolved. The centrist Liberal Democrats will win 61 seats, and Nigel Farage's right-wing populist Reform UK, a Brexit activist, 13.

This represents an incredible turnaround for Starmer and Labour, who critics and supporters said just three years ago faced an existential crisis when they lost a parliamentary seat by a 16 percent margin to the Conservatives, an almost unique victory for a governing party.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has admitted defeat in the general election, telling people at the vote count in his constituency: "I'm sorry."

"The Labour Party has won this general election," Sunak said, adding that he had called Keir Starmer to congratulate him and acknowledge the election results.

Sunak has honorably admitted defeat and accepted responsibility for the poor result.

"Today, power will pass from one hand to another in an orderly and peaceful manner. The British people have made a sobering decision tonight. There is much to learn and reflect on, and I take responsibility for the loss,” he added.
