(Patria) - The trial of former US President Donald Trump for alleged mishandling of classified documents will begin on May 20 next year, according to a court order.
Trump's lawyers resisted setting a date, but said any trial should be held after the US presidential election in November 2024, in which he is the favorite for the Republican nomination, Reuters reports.
Trump's spokesperson said the trial schedule "allows President Trump and his legal team to continue to fight" the criminal case.
Friday's ruling came from US District Judge Aileen Cannon, who sits in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Trump was accused on June 8 of unlawfully retaining national security documents when he left office and lying to officials who sought their return. He pleaded not guilty.
Federal prosecutors had asked Cannon to schedule the trial for December. The case is one of several legal issues Trump faces.
He will be tried in Manhattan on March 25 on separate charges of falsifying business records to conceal a hush-money payment to a porn star.
He said on Tuesday that he had received a letter stating he is the target of a grand jury investigation into efforts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election.
