(Patria) - The trial of former US President Donald Trump on charges of unlawful retention of classified government documents will begin in May next year.
The trial date of May 20, 2024, set by US District Judge Aileen Cannon, is not in line with the prosecution's request for an early December start, nor with the post-election period proposed by Trump's team.
The trial will take place at the end of the Republican primary nomination season, as the party selects an opponent for the Democratic candidate, President Joe Biden.
Cannon said she agreed with the legal teams that starting the trial on August 14 would deprive both the prosecution and the defense of the time needed to adequately prepare the case. The content is extensive, including, according to Cannon, more than 1,545 pages of classified documents and months of security camera footage.
Trump pleaded not guilty to the 37 counts federal prosecutors brought on June 14 related to his alleged retention of classified government documents after leaving office.
