The Fate of the Balkans Will Be Determined by Russia-West Relations

Renowned global anti-globalist Noam Chomsky assessed that the fate of Serbia and other Balkan countries will depend on the outcome of the conflict between Russia and the West, as well as on the survival of the EU, reports the Patria News Agency.

Chomsky emphasized that both sides in the Ukrainian conflict are aware of the danger of further escalation, and expressed hope that they will find a way to reduce tensions.

- It is unknown whether the EU will survive, and the outcome of the current conflict between Russia and the West is equally unpredictable. The fate of the Balkans will depend precisely on the development of these uncertain events, Chomsky said in an interview for the jubilee issue of the newspaper "Nin".

He pointed out that the EU is in danger, but that "the European project also has certain virtues, thanks to which it may overcome the current simmering crises".

Chomsky stressed that the neoliberal austerity policies during the recession, implemented by Germany and financial institutions, are yielding catastrophic results, especially in less developed countries. Therefore, he said, it is not surprising that faith in major political parties and the EU itself has been lost in some countries.

- Left-wing parties in Greece and Spain, Syriza and Podemos, are close to gaining concrete political power, and their policies are based on opposing the neoliberal offensive, which is actually a form of bitter late war waged by big capital, Chomsky said.

Speaking about the American war against the Islamic State, Chomsky assessed that Washington's policy towards this extremist group is incorrect.
