(Patria) - At least 15 people were killed in an accident that occurred yesterday on a major highway in central Canada, local media report, citing anonymous sources.
Police, who have not yet responded to AFP inquiries, wrote on Twitter that they are responding "to the scene of a serious collision" near the town of Carberry, in the province of Manitoba.
According to Canadian media, a semi-trailer truck and a van for transporting disabled people were involved in the accident.
"I was deeply saddened to learn of the accident that occurred near Carberry. I extend my condolences to all those affected by this tragedy," Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson posted on Twitter.
Police are asking drivers to avoid the area and allow emergency vehicles to pass. Highway traffic has been blocked in both directions, authorities added, reports Hina.
Nirmesh Vadera, who works at a motel near the accident site, told AFP that a large number of rescue vehicles and two helicopters had arrived.
Thick smoke could be seen around the accident site, which occurred around noon (7 PM Central European Time).
- The scale of the accident is truly unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it - he told AFP.
According to him, the tractor overturned on the road and the van caught fire.
