Court in Bihać: Dr. Bašanović sentenced to one year in prison for negligent treatment and death of 8-year-old

For negligent treatment that caused the death of the minor son of Irma and Bajro Redžepović, Dr. Amir Bašanović was today found guilty before the Cantonal Court in Bihać and sentenced to one year in prison in a first-instance verdict, reports the Patria news agency.

Two years ago, a routine tonsillectomy caused postoperative complications that resulted in the death of an eight-year-old boy.

Explaining the verdict, the President of the Trial Chamber, Fikret Hodžić, pointed out that during the trial, through the testimony of witnesses and experts, it was established that the boy was not provided with adequate healthcare, i.e., after the complications that arose, he was not kept in the Cantonal Hospital.

Although the law prescribes a sentence of 1 to 8 years in prison for such acts, the court took into account Dr. Bašanović's previous work and dedication and imposed the minimum sentence, considering it adequate for this criminal offense. Both parties have the right to appeal this decision, reports RTV USK.
