EU-Turkey agreement enters into force: Everyone hopes migrants will abandon deadly routes

The EU-Turkey agreement on resolving the migrant crisis has entered into force. Migrants arriving in Greece from today will be returned to Turkey unless they apply for asylum in Greece.

However, Greece has stated that the necessary preconditions for implementing the agreement have not yet been met, such as the lack of qualified personnel to carry out the agreement, including interpreters... As many as 2,300 experts from various fields are still expected to arrive in Greece.

Under the agreement, for every Syrian refugee returned from Greece to Turkey, one Syrian will be resettled from Turkey to the EU. Additionally, Turkey has received billions of euros in aid from the EU, and further concessions will be made, such as accelerating negotiations on Turkey's EU accession.

The EU hopes the agreement will deter people from the dangerous sea route from Turkey to Greece. Since the beginning of 2015, millions of refugees have arrived in the EU by boat from Turkey, with thousands dying on that route. Smugglers transport people in unsafe boats. A few days ago, a four-month-old baby drowned at sea.

Yesterday, thousands of people protested in Geneva, London, Barcelona, Athens, Amsterdam, and other cities, calling for open borders for migrants, NAP reports.
