(Patria) - Finnish President Alexander Stubb believes there are three possible scenarios for developments surrounding Greenland in the context of US President Donald Trump's efforts to expand American influence on the Arctic island.
In an interview with The Washington Post on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, when asked how confident he was that tensions between Trump and Europe over Greenland would decrease, Stubb was direct: "There is a good scenario. There is a bad scenario. And there is an ugly scenario".
According to him, the good scenario implies that allies will manage to de-escalate the situation, find a solution, and strengthen security in the Arctic within NATO.
- The bad scenario is one that would, in one way or another, lead to a break between Greenland and Denmark, and we do not know the outcome of such developments - Stubb pointed out.
He did not rule out the possibility of military action.
- And, of course, the ugly scenario that no one wants to believe in is a military takeover - the Finnish president stated.
He added that he and other leaders want to find a solution, but also warned that there is a group of people who believe that Trump's focus on Greenland is a "turning point" and that it is time for "tough opposition" and "countermeasures" against the US.
- In this, I am a true Finn. You must not get upset. Sometimes it is good to slow down, go to the sauna, then take a dip in the ice-cold water, and then find a solution - Stubb concluded.
