Stubb: Finland does not plan to become a nuclear power

(Patria) - Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated yesterday that his country should remain a member of NATO without any restrictions, but that it will not become a nuclear power.

Stubb emphasized that Finland does not see an immediate military threat from Russia and that the country's defense is based on national capabilities within NATO's collective defense.

- Finland does not need nuclear weapons in peacetime. No one has suggested that Finland import nuclear weapons onto its territory - Stubb said, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

He added that further preparations regarding nuclear weapons will be the responsibility of the Government and that no nuclear weapons will be deployed on Finnish territory.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo reiterated the ruling coalition's stance that nuclear weapons will not be present in peacetime, adding that their policy is in line with the opposition's proposals.

The leader of the largest opposition party, Antti Lindtman, stated that the Social Democrats support the need for restrictions regarding nuclear weapons and have prepared their proposals in this regard.
