Horrific accident in Stockholm: Bus crashes into station, fatalities and injuries reported

(Patria) - Several people have died and more have been injured after a bus hit a bus station in the center of Stockholm this afternoon, Swedish police confirmed.



The accident occurred around 3 PM on Valhallavägen, one of the busiest streets in the Swedish capital.

Police stated that the bus driver has been arrested and an investigation into negligent homicide has been opened, BBC reports.



A witness, a shop owner on that street, told SVT that the bus hit a pole in front of the bus station shelter and that several people ran into his shop in panic.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his shock at the news of the tragedy.



- Tragic news has reached me that several people have died and been injured at a bus station in the center of Stockholm. We do not yet know the cause of this, but my thoughts are primarily with those affected and their loved ones.



Police, ambulance, and rescue services now have a very difficult and important job. I urge everyone to show consideration and understanding for their tasks - Kristersson said in a statement to Aftonbladet.
