Several hundred people gathered in the center of Brussels on Tuesday evening to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks that occurred in the Belgian capital earlier that day, the news agency Patria reports.
Some of those gathered carried signs in French and Flemish, reading "I am Brussels", alluding to the slogan carried after the attacks in Paris in January last year on the editorial office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which then read "I am Charlie" in solidarity.
In the square in front of the Brussels Stock Exchange, people laid flowers and lit candles, comforting each other. Other posters read "United against hate" and "22/3/2016 - the stars no longer shine in the Brussels sky".
The focus of conversations on the main square was the terrorist attacks on the airport and the subway station, which killed at least 30 people and wounded around 230.
"We are here to show that we are not afraid. We stand together," said a woman named Isabelle.
Student Jef said he had mixed feelings about this impromptu commemoration. "It's good to see everyone sticking together," he said, adding that this gathering had turned into an event. "The most important thing now is for the injured to recover," said the Brussels student, writes Index.
