Stoltenberg concerned: Tensions in the Western Balkans growing

(Patria) - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed his regular end-of-year speech, speaking about the challenges facing the North Atlantic Alliance.

Stoltenberg said that we live in a dangerous world and that NATO is working to maintain peace.

"We live in a more dangerous world. We have a real war in Europe and a new war in the Middle East. Tensions in the Western Balkans are growing. There is no security without strong protection. And there is no strong defense without capable armies," he said in the introduction of his speech.

He said that peace in Kosovo is key to the stability of the region.

"Helping maintain a peaceful and secure environment for everyone in Kosovo is key to the stability of the wider Western Balkans region," Stoltenberg added.

The NATO chief thanked all alliance troops who are making efforts to preserve peace in various parts of the world, saying they have increased readiness "not to provoke war, but to prevent conflicts."

"At this time of year, my deepest gratitude and respect goes to our NATO forces. Without you, there would be no NATO, security, and freedom. Their service keeps us safe, secure, and free. Happy holidays and best wishes for the New Year," Stoltenberg said at the end.
