NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted in Brussels the countries making progress towards membership in the Alliance, reports the Patria News Agency.
- Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia and the Republic of Macedonia are also showing progress towards NATO membership - Stoltenberg told reporters. According to him, the decision on Montenegro confirms that the "NATO door is open" for new members, Stoltenberg told the media, reports Patria.
Spokesperson for President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the expansion of the alliance to the east cannot but lead to retaliatory action from Russia.
Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security Viktor Ozerov said:
- Russia will abandon the implementation of joint programs with Montenegro, including in the field of military-technical cooperation.
NATO, however, is not concerned by these threats from Russia, emphasizing that this expansion is not directed against Russia.
