Stockholm Metro is 110 kilometers long

(Patria) - While the mention of public transport and underground trains evokes images of crowds and dirt for most of the world, it is not the case in Sweden, of course.

In Northern Europe, good design, as well as art, will find its way underground, and the Stockholm metro, Tunnelban, has been one of the city's major attractions for decades.

The Stockholm metro is often described as the longest exhibition in the world - it is as long as 110 kilometers, reports Punkufer.hr.

The first line of the Swedish capital's metro was opened in 1950, today it has almost a hundred stations, and a major project to extend the underground railway network, which began in 2014 and will last until 2030, is underway.

Artists began to bring the stations of the Stockholm metro to life back in 1957, so the colorfulness that fills the underground of this Northern European city today is a unique example of a visual organism that lives underground, develops, grows, and has not died for almost 70 years.

The only difference in approach is that in the beginning, the metro was built, and later it would be "supplemented" or "decorated" with artistic details, murals, or installations, while in every subsequent wave, including the latest wave of expansion of the underground network, new artworks that will shape them are planned in parallel with the new lines and stations.

Each new metro station in Stockholm will also have its own unique artistic design, and 150 artists have worked on the architectural and design solutions for the new stations and design since the beginning of this "underground" project.

A journey on the Stockholm metro thus turns into a journey through many worlds, each exactly one station long, and the entire network forms an interesting cross-section of contemporary art from the 1950s onwards.

Murals, mosaics, installations, and exhibits alternate at a great speed, especially in the center, while towards the periphery, the expressions are more discreet and smaller.
