Russia's stance in the Security Council: Tehran's attack a consequence of UN inaction on Israeli strikes on Iranian diplomatic facilities

(Patria) - Iran's attack on Israel did not happen in a vacuum, but resulted from the UN Security Council's inaction on the Israeli attack on Iranian diplomatic facilities, the latest of which was in Damascus, stated Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya at an emergency session of the Security Council regarding Iran's attack on Israel.

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Gilan Erdan said that Iran violated the UN Charter and international law with its attack on Israel, calling on the Security Council to impose additional sanctions on Tehran.

Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir Said Iravani emphasized that Iran's retaliatory strike on Israel was carried out exclusively within the framework of the inalienable right to self-defense.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the Middle East is on the brink of a major conflict and that the time has come for de-escalation and maximum restraint.

The Security Council session is being held at Israel's request, after Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel on the night between Saturday and Sunday, in retaliation for the Israeli attack on the Iranian diplomatic mission in Damascus.
