SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The incentive for greenhouse production in the Old Town was of exceptional importance for farmers this year, as it will help them cope with the consequences of the coronavirus, increase their household budgets, and thanks to their work, they will harvest numerous fruits of the earth. In mid-April, five farmers received 100 m2 greenhouses from the Municipality of Stari Grad, and the mayor, Mr. Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, personally visited some of them. It was clear on the ground that these were people who fed their families this way, but they also had something to share with those who had less than them. It was then announced that everyone who applied would receive greenhouses in the Old Town, a total of 28 families, and that promise was fulfilled.
Their greenhouses are smaller, 50 m2, but utilized to the last centimeter and planted with numerous crops: peppers, tomatoes, green beans, zucchini, onions...
In Golobrdica street in the Širokača settlement, 84-year-old grandmother Izeta Sućeska has a greenhouse. This hardworking old woman proudly listed everything she had planted in the greenhouse.
“A little bit of everything: a little green beans in one corner, lettuce and spinach in another, then peppers and tomatoes, everything. And everything has started well, there will be a little for everyone. I have no words or way to thank Mayor Hadžibajrić and the Municipality for giving us the greenhouse,” said grandmother Izeta.
Below the slopes of Trebević in the Boguševac settlement, pensioner Ramiza Trle says that she planted vegetables in the greenhouse for the first time with great expectations.
“This is a great help for me and my family. Now I will be able to plant almost all year round, from early spring to late autumn. A big thank you to the Municipality of Stari Grad and Mayor Hadžibajrić for recognizing our work and giving us this valuable gift,” said the 69-year-old Ramiza, who planted tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, peas, and onions in her greenhouse.
In the Bajramuša settlement, the large Čerkez family has been engaged in agricultural production for years. In addition to seedlings in the greenhouse, this hardworking family already has potatoes, onions, and beans planted in their garden...
“The greenhouse will help us a lot, considering the unstable weather conditions. Lately, it has been very difficult for some vegetables to grow in the open, but that is now over since we have the greenhouse,” the Čerkez family said.
The mayor, Mr. Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, ordered the Service for Economy two months ago, in order to help the residents of the Old Town, to accept all submitted applications for greenhouses, provided that the necessary conditions are met.
“When the coronavirus pandemic passes, I fear we will face a lack of money and a difficult economic situation. That is why we decided to give greenhouses to everyone who applied, and we will also help those who want to sow in their yards and gardens, outdoors. So far, about 110 families have applied, and we will help them with seeds. I hope we will realize that we now have to turn to ourselves, to our own work and to cultivating the land,” said the mayor, Mr. Hadžibajrić, at the time.
