Starmer and Trump discussed 'just and lasting' end to Ukraine war

(Patria) - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with President Donald Trump on Sunday about efforts to achieve a "just and lasting end" to the war in Ukraine, Starmer's office at Downing Street announced, following talks between officials in Florida, Reuters reported.

"The two leaders began by reflecting on the war in Ukraine," Starmer's office said in a summary of the call, adding that they discussed the work of the so-called "Coalition of the Willing" countries committed to supporting Ukraine.

"The Prime Minister briefed on the work of the Coalition of the Willing to support any peace agreement and ensure a just and lasting end to hostilities."

American negotiators met with Russian officials in Florida on Saturday for the latest talks aimed at ending the conflict, as the Trump administration seeks to broker a deal between both sides.

The meeting in Miami followed US talks on Friday with Ukrainian and European officials, the latest discussions on a peace plan that has raised some hope for resolving the conflict that began when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

A Downing Street statement also said that Starmer and Trump discussed the appointment of Christian Turner as ambassador to the United States after his predecessor Peter Mandelson was dismissed when emails of support he sent to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were revealed.
