Tombstones vandalized at Muslim cemetery in Washington

The Bosnian community living in Western Washington (Maltby) is shocked by the destroyed tombstones and monuments at the Snohomish cemetery, writes q13fox.com, reports the BH News Agency Patria.

Refugees who fled the bloody violence in their country now fear that hatred has led vandals to destroy the resting place of their loved ones. As Meliha Babić, whose mother and uncle are buried in this cemetery, said, the tombstone at her uncle's grave was knocked down and broken.

- They died in peace, but they cannot rest in peace. It is unacceptable for any such place to be destroyed in this manner - Babić said.

Refugees believe that such an act is related to the fact that they are Muslims, and now they fear what will happen next.

- We have two parts of the cemetery, Christian and Muslim. It seems that all the damage was done in the newer part where Bosniak Muslims are buried - Babić stated. 

The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said there is not enough evidence to show that hatred motivated this act of vandalism, but it is believed that the vandals had a clear intention.

It has been decided to install surveillance cameras to identify the vandals should they return.
