Srna-Bajramović requests that the Assembly become involved in the murder case of Dženan Memić

Segmedina Srna-Bajramović, SDP BiH representative in the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton, has submitted an initiative requesting that the Assembly immediately form a parliamentary investigative commission, which will urgently examine failures in police procedures in the murder case of Dženan Memić, Patria reports.

- It is high time that the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton began fully implementing the laws it has itself adopted, and in the interest of the citizens who elected us to represent their interests in this legislative body. The recent letter from the Chief Prosecutor of Sarajevo Canton, Dalida Burzić, addressed to the parents of the murdered Dženan Memić, once again confirmed what we all know: that there are serious problems in the work of institutions tasked with fighting crime in Sarajevo Canton.

It is evident from the Chief Prosecutor's letter that there are obstructions within the police regarding the investigation of this case! Unfortunately, this is not the first such case. For this reason, I request that the Security Committee of the Assembly, in accordance with its competencies defined by the Law on Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, immediately proceed to appoint a special parliamentary investigative commission to examine the actions and work of police officers in this case. Deputies in the Assembly have the ability and an even greater obligation to act in such cases.

It is unacceptable that the Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor's Office encounters obstructions within the police ranks in such cases, which is more than clear to anyone who has read Prosecutor Burzić's letter.

It is precisely for these reasons that I proposed amendments to the Law on Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton to ensure adequate possibilities for civilian oversight of police work. The deputies in the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton supported these proposals at the time, and that is why today we have the legal possibility to react in this and all similar cases and attempt to eliminate and sanction any failures, arbitrariness, and abuses within the police ranks.

I also call on citizens who are rightly disturbed by this case, as well as all other similar cases, to put pressure on us deputies in the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton, so that we more seriously dedicate ourselves to implementing the legal possibilities that allow the Assembly to become involved in resolving such cases.

Once again, I emphasize, I publicly call on the Security Committee of the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton to use the legal possibilities and form an investigative commission that would examine all circumstances of police procedures in the murder case of Dženan Memić and thus provide concrete assistance in resolving this case. We owe this to the family of the murdered Dženan, but also to all citizens who have every right to live in Sarajevo without fear and to be protected from criminals, whoever they may be.

The current situation in Sarajevo is far from that, and the Assembly must become involved to change it. Otherwise, we risk, through our inaction, amnestying the illegal behavior of individuals in state institutions and becoming accomplices in creating a society of impunity and irresponsibility - states Srna-Bajramović.
