(Paria) - Rescue teams found a body inside a section of a Chilean copper mine that collapsed two days earlier during a moderate earthquake, the mine director said on Saturday, AP reported last night.
Rescuers are trying to reach five miners who were trapped on Thursday evening in the El Teniente mine in central Chile as rocks collapsed around them during a 4.2 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale. The copper mine is one of the largest in Chile.
A spokesman for the rescue team, which is trying to drill through ninety metres of rock to reach the miners, said the body found on Saturday was one of the five miners trapped in the mine.
El Teniente director Andres Music said authorities are still trying to identify the body.
The body of another miner, who is not among the five still trapped, identified as Paulo Marin Tapia, was found on Friday, shortly after the partial collapse of the mine.
Nine other mining workers sustained injuries, the Chilean National Copper Corporation, known as Codelco, said, describing the incident as a consequence of a "seismic event".
