(Patria) - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he will remain at the helm of Spain, five days after speculation about his future. Last week, Sánchez announced that he was canceling all official engagements after a court opened a preliminary investigation against his wife over corruption allegations.
He called the accusations a campaign of harassment orchestrated by right-wing media.
Sánchez has been in power since 2018.
His decision last week to take a break from his duties to consider whether it was worth continuing as prime minister surprised even people from his own Socialist Party (PSOE). The accusations against his wife, Begoña Gómez, were brought by the organization Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), led by a man linked to the far-right named Miguel Bernad.
On Thursday, the Madrid public prosecutor requested that the investigation be shelved due to a lack of evidence. Manos Limpias also admitted that the accusations might be inaccurate as they are based on online news stories – one of which has already been proven false.
