Spanish Prime Minister Criticizes 'Double Standards' on Gaza Amid NATO Support for Ukraine

(Patria) - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who attended the NATO leaders' summit, called on Wednesday for the West to reject "double standards" regarding the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

Spain under Sanchez has angered the Israeli right-wing government by recognizing a Palestinian state and criticizing Israel's conduct of the war against Hamas.

"If we tell our people that we support Ukraine because we defend international law, it is the same as what we must do for Gaza," he told the summit marking NATO's 75th anniversary in Washington, AFP reported. The socialist leader said there should be a "consistent political stance" in which "we do not have double standards".

Sanchez said the world must push to "stop this terrible humanitarian crisis" affecting Palestinians and called for an international peace conference to advocate for the creation of a Palestinian state.

"We must create the conditions for an immediate ceasefire," he said.

"There is a real risk of escalation in Lebanon," he added.

Sanchez also said he supports "democracy, freedom and the right to exist of a country like Ukraine".

NATO leaders at the summit issued a declaration stating that Kyiv was on an "irreversible" path to joining the alliance.
