Spain recalls its ambassador to Argentina after President Milei's statements

(Patria) - The Spanish government announced yesterday that it is recalling its ambassador to Argentina indefinitely, accusing Argentine President Javier Milei of "insulting Spain" and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during a speech in Madrid.

The head of Spanish diplomacy, José Manuel Albares, stated that Spain is seeking a public apology from the Argentine president, following his statement during the day about the Spanish Prime Minister's wife.

Milei participated yesterday in the "Europa Viva 24" congress organized by the Spanish far-right party Vox, of which he was the guest of honor.

The Argentine president, known for his unpredictable statements, attacked left-wing parties with offensive terms. He accused Sánchez's wife, Begoña, of being "corrupt," although he did not explicitly mention her name.

- The world elites do not realize how destructive the implementation of socialist ideas can be. They do not know the type of society and country that this can produce, and the type of people who cling to power and the level of abuse that it can generate. And when you have a corrupt wife, you get stained and you need five days to think about it - Milei said.

The Argentine president alluded to Sánchez's recent decision to suspend all his activities and step down for five days to consider a possible resignation, after the Spanish judiciary opened a preliminary investigation against his wife for influence peddling and corruption.

- The extremely harsh words that Milei uttered today in Madrid go beyond any kind of political and ideological differences. These words are unprecedented in the history of international relations, let alone in the history of relations between two countries and two peoples united by strong bonds of brotherhood.

For these reasons, I have recalled our ambassador in Buenos Aires indefinitely for consultations, and Spain demands a public apology from Milei - the head of Spanish diplomacy said yesterday in a televised statement a few hours after the Argentine president's statement.

According to him, if there is no apology, then Spain will "take all measures it deems appropriate to defend its sovereignty and dignity." However, he did not specify what these measures would be.
