(Patria) - Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced yesterday 3.5 million euros in emergency aid to the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).
Such a move by Spain followed after several countries froze funding to UNRWA following allegations that several agency employees were involved in Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7.
Albares explained that additional aid would be mobilized in the short term and emphasized that UNRWA provides assistance to six million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza.
He stated that 1.2 million refugees in Gaza "depend almost exclusively on UNRWA's aid".
Albares added that the UN agency is "desperate" and that there is a serious risk that its humanitarian efforts in Gaza will be halted in the coming weeks.
- The humanitarian situation in Palestine is a priority of our international cooperation - Albares said.
Spain advocates for an international peace conference that would culminate in the recognition of a viable Palestinian state.
