
(Patria) - Large parts of Spain and Portugal, including Madrid and Lisbon, have been affected by power outages. The Spanish electricity grid operator Red Electrica announced that it is cooperating with energy companies to restore electricity supply, Sky News reports.
According to reports from Spanish media, power outages were also recorded in parts of France, including Seville, Barcelona and Valencia.
Telephone lines across the country were also reported to be down.
Parts of the Madrid metro were evacuated, and traffic lights in the city are not functioning, local media report. The competition at the Madrid Open tennis tournament has been temporarily suspended.
According to the latest information, additional power supply disruptions have been reported even in Belgium.
The cause of the outage is still unknown. However, domestic media report problems in the European electricity grid that have affected national systems on the Iberian Peninsula.
