Spaniards offer war photos from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia as a tourist attraction

Santillana del Mar, a small medieval town with 4,200 inhabitants in northern Spain, offers tourists an unusual attraction - viewing war photographs from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Latin American, African and Asian countries, reports the Patria news agency.

The exhibition "Antología", which is also the name of the photo book, covers painful moments captured by Spanish photojournalist Gervasio Sanchez (56) during his 25-year career as a war reporter.

"About a thousand visitors see the exhibition each month," an employee at the entrance of the gallery in the heart of the rural town surrounded by hills told Hina. The ticket costs only one euro, and pensioners can view the exhibition for free.

Santillana del Mar, just a few kilometres from the Cantabrian Sea, is only a stop on the "Antología" tour across Spain.

"The exhibition is not permanent but travels around the country after we published the second edition of the book," says Laura Lanuza Buil, spokesperson for the publishing house Blume based in Barcelona. The book is sold in Spain and all Latin American countries.

In Santillana del Mar, the exhibition has been on display for a month and will evoke emotions until 15 September. Passers-by, on an afternoon stroll along the main cobblestone street, stop in front of the gallery entrance, from whose poster the troubled gaze of an unknown woman from Kosovo looks at them.

Below the woman in a refugee column fleeing violence with a child on her back, there is a photograph of four children in a van with broken windows in Sarajevo in 1994.

The book, with about 200 photographs taken from 1984 to 2010, is divided into sections "Latin America", "Balkan", "Africa", "Mined Lives" and "The Disappeared". In the part dedicated to the "Balkan", most photographs are from Sarajevo. Three are from Croatia, accompanied by a text about the author's experience during his stay there, writes Index.
