(Patria) - Mount Tateyama in northern Japan attracts thousands of curious visitors every year who come to see what mountain ranges covered in tens of meters of snow look like and to drive through snow canyons.
Due to the moisture brought by the winds from the Sea of Japan, the northern part of the country is one of the snowiest areas in the world.
One of the three mountain ranges in the Japanese Alps Hida records up to 38 meters of snow annually, reports Punkufer.
The local residents have devised a new way to deal with the snow. Many have installed specially designed roofs on their houses, some have heating equipment that melts snow from the roof, and others have built roofs so strong that they can withstand snow up to two meters thick.
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, also known as the "Roof of Japan", is one of the most picturesque for snow lovers.
It is 90 kilometers long and is most popular in winter when the white canyon of the Great Snow Valley presents a spectacular sight when up to 20 meters of snow falls.
