Recorded last night: 15,000 vehicles blocked, one person killed

Snow and ice in the French Alps blocked 15,000 vehicles on the way to ski resorts or returning from skiing, French media reported.

France has issued an orange weather warning while local authorities made efforts to secure accommodation for drivers and passengers during the night into Sunday, reports the Patria news agency. 

On Saturday, reception centres were organised in sports halls in the Savoy region.

One man died when his vehicle fell into a ravine in the Isère region, and three people lost their lives in snow-related incidents across France earlier this week, writes the French daily Le Monde.

The government warned drivers to be extremely cautious and to avoid travelling in these weather conditions if at all possible.

Snow conditions in the French Alps continue on Sunday.
