Strong earthquake hits South America, tsunami warning issued

(Patria) - An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck an area about 200 kilometers from Ushuaia, Argentina's southernmost city, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The epicenter was 219 kilometers off the coast in the Drake Passage at a depth of ten kilometers.

The Drake Passage is a sea route between the southernmost tip of South America and Antarctica. The U.S. National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning.

The Chilean Antarctic Institute (INAHC) told Reuters that bases in Antarctica are in the process of evacuation.

Reports of aftershocks have also come in from the region.

In a post on the X platform, Chilean President Gabriel Boric said: "We call for the evacuation of the coast throughout the Magallanes region."

He added that all state resources would be made available to respond to potential consequences.

Chile's disaster management agency advised residents to "remain calm and follow the instructions of authorities and rescue teams."

According to local media, the evacuation is a precautionary measure, and citizens are urged to head to safe areas at least 30 meters above sea level.

In the city of Puerto Williams, more than 1,100 people have been evacuated, according to local sources.

Videos have appeared on social media, whose authenticity has not yet been confirmed, showing people calmly leaving the affected areas, with sirens heard in the background.
