Powerful tornado hits Haiti: More than 50 injured, 200 homes destroyed

(Patria) - More than 50 people were injured and more than 200 homes destroyed in a tornado that hit northern Haiti, the United Nations announced yesterday.

The tornado hit the community of Bassin-Bleu on Tuesday, leaving more than 300 families homeless, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced.

The office stated that at least 10 people were seriously injured, and local media report that they have been hospitalized.

The statement added that the Civil Protection Agency and the Haitian Red Cross were the first responders and are assessing the damage, AP reports.

The Civil Protection Agency announced that heavy rain is expected in most of Haiti, including the tornado-affected area, warning of possible floods and landslides.
