SARAJEVO, (Patria) – The death of epidemiologist Dr. Šefik Pašagić, who was placed in isolation at Podhrastovi, has not only shocked his family, colleagues, and the public, given that he was giving statements about the coronavirus about fifteen days ago, but has also raised questions about the way healthcare is provided to the sick.
For several days in a row, the head of the Crisis Staff of the Sarajevo Canton, Aida Pilav, has been repeating an almost identical sentence about the number of patients placed at Podhrastovi without detailing their health condition.
In Sarajevo, four patients have died: a 52-year-old woman, a 50-year-old woman, 61-year-old Dr. Pašagić, and one person for whom neither gender nor age has been released.
After the death of his colleague Pašagić, Dr. Dragan Đokanović published a lengthy status on Facebook.
„In the isolation ward of the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases at Podhrastovi, KCUS, 61-year-old Dr. Šefik Pašagić, a specialist in epidemiology, died from the consequences of coronavirus infection on April 5, 2020...
Rest in peace, colleague...When one reads the statements that the authorities in Sarajevo gave to the media in previous days, it can be noted that none of them mentioned that colleague Šefik Pašagić was in serious condition at KCUS.
Dr. Aida Pilav, epidemiologist of the Crisis Staff of the Sarajevo Canton, at a press conference on April 3, even emphasized that the seriously ill patient was not on a ventilator, without specifying which patient she was referring to. If she meant colleague Pašagić, that he was that seriously ill patient and that he was not on a ventilator, then Dr. Aida Pilav and the director of KCUS, Sebija Izetbegović, would have to explain to the public why that "more serious case," as Dr. Pilav said, was not on a ventilator at that moment?
Every doctor in Sarajevo should be alarmed by the fact that the director of KCUS, Dr. Sebija Izetbegović, did not even hint with a single publicly spoken word that our colleague Pašagić was in a life-threatening condition,” stated Dr. Đokanović.
The Cantonal Prosecutor's Office has already opened a case regarding the death of the 52-year-old woman who was not tested for coronavirus for days despite having all the symptoms. She was not tested solely because no link was established with someone already infected or a country that is a coronavirus hotspot. Only after her death was coronavirus confirmed in A.K., and subsequently in her daughter. Given that the autopsy ordered by the Cantonal Prosecutor's Office has not yet been performed, the burial of the deceased has also not yet taken place.
The Cantonal Prosecutor's Office should also determine in the case of Dr. Pašagić whether he was denied medical assistance and testing, as well as whether he received adequate healthcare.
