Smith: Trump would have been convicted if not re-elected president

(Patria) - Special Prosecutor Jack Smith believes that indicting Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results would have resulted in a conviction if voters had not re-elected him as President of the United States.

Smith stated that his team "stood up for the rule of law" while investigating Trump in an attempt to reverse the results when he was in his first presidential term.

"The core of all of Donald Trump’s criminal acts was deception – knowingly false claims of election fraud, and the evidence shows that Trump weaponized those lies to endanger the functioning of the federal government, which is founded on the U.S. democratic process," Smith stated in his report, AP reports.

The report, released just days before Trump is set to take office as president on January 20, once again draws attention to his failed attempt to retain power in 2020.

As the prosecution was halted due to Trump's election victory last year, the document is considered a final review of "this dark chapter of American history," which threatened the peaceful transition of power, a fundamental pillar of democracy.

Trump stated yesterday on his Truth Social platform that he was "completely innocent" and called Smith incapable of initiating a trial before the election. He added: "The voters have spoken."
